Jenny- this was so, so good. Stop me in my tracks good. And as someone who does have a couple of advanced degrees I will assure you- the learning wasn’t there. It was in all the places you speak of. I don’t want to discount the tenacity it takes to show up and complete degrees but wisdom, true wisdom comes from life experience. When you throw yourself in like you have, all the way, and stay eyes wide open. So it made me smile to read this.

So true! I was the founding Poetry Editor for the Bellevue Literary Review for over ten years. This literary magazine is out of the infamous Bellevue Hospital in NYC and brought together the poetry and stories of doctors, nurses, and patients in once place.
Your writing made me think of this and reminded me why I was drawn to this journal in the first place... the empathy and shared stories that connect us all!
This is stunning—I read it last night and have been thinking about it all day. I was watching a show and scrolling Substack, but then everything else just faded away when I found this essay and read your words...twice.
